Television's Influence on History

So many times we overlook the great impact that the television has over our lives. This revolutionary invention has offered a new form of instant communication, education, and has bound the world closer together. Good or bad, it's messages have changed the way we live and think.

Below is a list of television models at different points in history, and a few examples of just how much television has changed history.


TELEVISION SETS

Throughout history, many different versions of the television set arose, each claiming to be better than the next. Although they all look very different, all the sets are similar. Below is a table of several of these sets and a brief description.
1928 Electric Octagon Mechanical Television

UNITED STATES

Only four were ever created, and were made only for GE's laboratory experiments.

1930 Baird Telvisor

BRITAIN

Baird Studios provided the first programming in England, which was watched on this receiver created by John Logie Baird.

1939 RCA TRK-12 Phantom Teleceiver

UNITED STATES

Displayed at the 1939 World's Fair, this set was made deliberately clear in order to show crowds that no trickery was being used. It's one of a kind!

1948 Sentinel 400TV

UNITED STATES

An early design of a "suitcase" portable television, this television was very popular after World War II.

1952 Viking Console

CANADA

This set was developed by Electrohome in Kitchener, Ontario. This set made it's way into countless Canadian living rooms.

1958 Philco Predicta "Pedestal"

UNITED STATES

One could describe this set as original. The 21" picture tube can swibel 180 degrees, allowing for adjustabiliy. Furthermore, the tube is in a separate molded shell.

1961 Sony 9-301W

JAPAN

A portable, 8" screen television which was the first model by Sony to be sold in North America

1963 Electrohome Kirby Console

CANADA

This was the average television set in Canadian homes during the mid-1960s. American televisions during this decade also resembled this model.

TODAY'S TELEVISION

Today, technology has morphed the television into a more efficient tool for humans. Not only is HDTV (High Definition Television) just reaching the common market, but Web TV has also surfaced, allowing users to use their television as an Internet tool and entertainment center at the same time. Who knows what amazing new things the next few years will bring?
